Thom Loverro Launches New “Cigars & Curveballs” Podcast
First Episode Features Special Guest & Six-Time Baseball All-Star Bobby Bonilla
Washington – Thom Loverro’s “Cigars & Curveballs,” a one-hour podcast devoted to sports, culture and good times, will premiere Wednesday, July 13, 2016 with an interview with former six-time baseball All-Star – and the man with a baseball holiday now named after him – Bobby Bonilla.
Bonilla will talk about “Bobby Bonilla Day” – the July 1 date the New York Mets have to pay Bonilla $1.2 million every year until 2035 – even though Bonilla hasn’t played since 2001. Loverro will also talk about how Bonilla was “the best guy I covered” in 25 years writing about baseball.
Thom Loverro’s “Cigars & Curveballs” is a one-hour weekly podcast that features entertaining discussion on the hot sports topics of that week, as well as cultural features and other talks in a free-wheeling forum. “Cigars & Curveballs” features prominent guests from the world of sports and culture, from Hall of Famer Cal Ripken to noted TV storyteller David Simon of “The Wire” fame.
It is an entertaining story time, with the wealth of colorful tales that Loverro has gathered nearly over 40 years as a journalist, covering everything from organized crime to the Olympics. Loverro has been a sports columnist for The Washington Times since 1992 and has won more than 40 journalism awards over his career – including Maryland Sportswriter of the Year in 2009 and D.C. Sportswriter of the Year in 2014 from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He has also written 11 books, on subjects ranging from the Washington Redskins to professional wrestling.
Loverro was the co-host of one of the top rated programs in sports radio in Washington for more than six years – “The Sports Fix” on ESPN 980 radio, named one of the top 100 shows in sports talk radio annually by Talkers magazine. He is a regular contributor to “The Sports Reporters” in PM drive time in D.C. on ESPN 980.
